Det er et vigtigt udsagnsord, fordi det bruges så ofte både som hovedudsagnsord, og som hjælpeudsagnsord i mange sammensatte tider:
- Peter is ill. (is er hovedudsagnsord)
- The cat was killed by a car. (was er hjælpeudsagnsord, og killed er hovedudsagnsord)
- Peter is walking to school today. (is er hjælpeudsagnsord, og walking er hovedudsagnsord)
Den typiske fejl
Den mest almindelige fejl i engelske essays er, at man bytter rundt på is og are, og på was og were.
Man bruger kun is og was, hvis grundleddet er i ental (kan erstattes af he, she eller it):
- My brother (= he) is ill today.
- My father (= he) was ill yesterday.
- My mother (= she) is at home all day today.
- My aunt (= she) was at home all day yesterday.
- The spider (= it) is dead.
- The car (= it) was washed yesterday.
Man bruger kun are og were hvis grundleddet er i flertal (kan erstattes af they):
- My brother and sister (= they) are ill today.
- The companies (= they) were closed down yesterday.
Så for at opsummere: hvis du får denne fejltype, så er det formentlig, fordi du har skrevet is eller was, når du skal bruge are eller were (eller omvendt).
